Indian rowers made waves at the Asian Rowing Championship 2025, clinching a total of 10 medals — including 3 golds, 5 silvers, and 2 bronzes — in a stellar display of strength and teamwork. The event concluded on Sunday in Hai Phong, Vietnam, marking one of India’s best performances at the continental stage.

Indian Rower Balraj Panwar Leads India’s Charge

Tokyo 2024 Olympian Balraj Panwar reaffirmed his elite status by securing the gold medal in the men’s single scull event. His commanding performance on the waters of Hai Phong underscored India’s growing prowess in international rowing.

The men’s team also claimed gold in the quadruple scull (M4X), thanks to Kulwinder Singh, Navdeep Singh, Satnam Singh, and Jakar Khan, while Lakshay and Ajay Tyagi captured gold in the lightweight double scull category.

Historic Silver for Indian Women After 15 Years

In a landmark moment for Indian women’s rowing, Gurbani Kaur and Diljot Kaur secured a silver medal in the lightweight pair event, ending a 15-year drought. The duo’s performance has been hailed as a resurgence of women’s rowing in India.

“Their medal is a symbol of perseverance and a source of inspiration for young female athletes,” said Dronacharya awardee Ismail Baig, celebrating the historic achievement.

India’s Rowing Future Looks Bright

Balaji Maradapa, Secretary of the Rowing Federation of India (RFI), lauded the team’s achievements, saying,

“Every stroke on the water was powered by the hope of a billion hearts. India’s performance at Hai Phong is a statement — that our rowers can stand shoulder to shoulder with the best in Asia.”

He added that the results are a strong indicator of India’s upward trajectory ahead of the 2026 Asian Games, emphasizing the federation’s commitment to improving training infrastructure and providing global exposure.
