India-US Trade Deal Gains Momentum:

Negotiations for a bilateral trade agreement (BTA) between India and the United States have gained significant momentum, according to the US-India Strategic Partnership Forum (USISPF). The development comes after senior business leaders held a closed-door roundtable with US Trade Representative Ambassador Jamieson Greer during the USISPF’s IX Annual Leadership Summit in Washington.

The discussions followed Ambassador Greer’s recent visit to India, where he met Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal to advance negotiations on a comprehensive trade framework.

High-Level Talks Focus on Key Trade Priorities

USISPF said the roundtable focused on building a balanced and mutually beneficial India-US Bilateral Trade Agreement, along with an interim trade arrangement aligned with the Joint Statement issued on February 6, 2026.

Business leaders and policymakers discussed several priority areas, including:

  • Expanding market access for businesses.
  • Strengthening digital trade cooperation.
  • Enhancing supply chain resilience.
  • Reducing non-tariff trade barriers.
  • Creating a commercially meaningful framework for long-term economic growth.

USISPF praised both negotiating teams for the steady progress made over recent months, describing the current stage of discussions as an important milestone in strengthening economic relations between the two countries.

Mission $500 Billion Trade Target

According to USISPF, companies on both sides remain optimistic that the proposed agreement will help achieve “Mission 500”—the ambitious goal set by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and US President Donald Trump to increase bilateral trade between India and the United States to $500 billion.

The organisation reaffirmed its commitment to supporting the negotiations and expressed confidence that a balanced agreement would generate substantial benefits for businesses, investors and consumers in both countries.

Industry Leaders See Historic Opportunity

USISPF President and CEO Mukesh Aghi said the discussions reflected the growing momentum in India-US economic engagement.

He noted that Ambassador Greer’s participation in the leadership summit, shortly after his meetings in New Delhi, highlighted the positive direction of bilateral trade talks.

Aghi described the current phase as a historic moment in the strategic partnership between India and the United States, particularly as America marks the 250th anniversary of its independence. He also commended both governments for working toward a mutually beneficial trade agreement that could deepen commercial ties and unlock new opportunities for investment and economic cooperation.

Strengthening the Strategic Partnership

The latest round of discussions has reinforced confidence among industry leaders that both governments are steadily moving toward a comprehensive trade framework. If finalized, the agreement is expected to strengthen trade, improve market access, encourage investment and further enhance economic cooperation between the world’s two largest democracies.
