The aid consignment, sent by the Government of India, arrived in Kingston aboard a C-17 aircraft of the Indian Air Force (IAF) on Thursday. The shipment was officially handed over to the Government of Jamaica during a ceremony attended by senior officials from both countries.

Strengthening India-Jamaica Relations

India’s High Commission in Kingston stated on X (formerly Twitter),

“India stands in solidarity and support with its philosophy of Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam — the world is one family. India and Jamaica share deep-rooted and strong relations, and India remains committed to assisting partners in the Global South in times of need.”

Present at the ceremony were Jamaica’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade, Kamina Johnson Smith, Indian High Commissioner Mayank Joshi, and Permanent Secretary Ambassador Sheila Sealy Monteith, along with teams from both the Jamaican Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Indian High Commission.

BHISHM Trauma Unit: A Lifesaving Innovation

Among the relief materials were essential post-hurricane supplies — generators, tents, bedding, kitchen kits, solar lanterns, hygiene kits, and other vital items. The highlight of the consignment is the BHISHM (Bharat Health Initiative for Sahyog, Hita, and Maitri) modular trauma unit — a field-level medical emergency cube designed and developed in India.

The BHISHM cube consists of 72 modular medical and surgical boxes, providing first-line emergency medical support in disaster-hit areas. To ensure effective usage, a four-member IAF medical team will conduct training sessions over the next four days for Jamaican medical professionals on the BHISHM system.

India’s Ongoing Global South Humanitarian Support

India’s swift response to Jamaica’s crisis highlights its growing leadership in Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief (HADR) operations and its active participation in the Coalition for Disaster Resilient Infrastructure (CDRI).

Earlier in April 2025, India had extended JMD 60 million (approx.) worth of disaster relief to Jamaica, which included 60 tonnes of materials such as neonatal incubators, blood-pressure monitors, solar lanterns, and essential medicines.

This latest HADR mission underlines India’s consistent support for disaster resilience and recovery efforts across the Caribbean and wider Global South.
