India-Finland held the 13th Foreign Office Consultations in Helsinki on Thursday, reaffirming their commitment to deepening cooperation across a wide spectrum of sectors including trade, investment, digitalisation, artificial intelligence (AI), 5G/6G technologies, clean energy, and sustainability.

The meeting was co-chaired by Secretary (West) Sibi George from India’s Ministry of External Affairs and Permanent State Secretary Jukka Salovaara from Finland. Both sides agreed to explore new opportunities in quantum computing, circular economy, education, research, and mobility, marking another milestone in India–Nordic relations.

India-Finland Expanding Digital and Technology Partnerships

According to MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal, India views Finland as a valued partner in the European Union and Nordic region. Jaiswal posted on X (formerly Twitter):

“13th India-Finland Foreign Office Consultations were held in Helsinki today. The sides reviewed the entire gamut of bilateral cooperation and agreed to strengthen it further in trade & investment, digitalization, quantum computing, 5G/6G, AI, sustainability, clean technologies, circular economy, education, and R&D.”

The Finnish side reiterated its support for an early conclusion of the India–EU Free Trade Agreement (FTA), which is expected to significantly boost trade flows and technology exchanges between India and the European bloc.

High-Level Engagements Reinforce Bilateral Cooperation

The consultations come shortly after a series of high-level interactions between leaders of both nations.

On August 30, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar spoke with Finnish Foreign Minister Elina Valtonen, discussing the Ukraine conflict and emphasizing India’s stance on dialogue and diplomacy.

Earlier, on August 27, Prime Minister Narendra Modi held a “productive” phone conversation with Finnish President Alexander Stubb, focusing on enhancing cooperation in trade, technology, and sustainability. PM Modi called Finland a “valued partner” of India in the EU, while President Stubb reaffirmed Finland’s support for the success of the AI Impact Summit 2026, to be hosted by India.

Both nations reiterated their commitment to peace, stability, and sustainable growth, with discussions also covering regional and global issues of mutual interest.
