India-Canada are taking major steps to deepen their economic cooperation as Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal and Canada’s Minister of International Trade Maninder Sidhu co-chaired the 7th India-Canada Ministerial Dialogue on Trade and Investment in New Delhi on Thursday. The meeting focused on new ways to strengthen trade, promote investments, and build partnerships in emerging sectors like artificial intelligence, clean technology, and digital industries.

Roadmap 2025: Strengthening Economic Partnerships
The high-level dialogue was part of the New Roadmap 2025, an initiative designed to expand bilateral ties and create long-term economic resilience between the two countries.
“It was a pleasure to co-chair the 7th India-Canada Ministerial Dialogue on Trade and Investment as part of the New Roadmap 2025,” Minister Piyush Goyal posted on X (formerly Twitter), noting that discussions centered around expanding trade avenues and investment cooperation.
Canadian Minister Maninder Sidhu, currently on an official visit to India, emphasized the importance of the partnership in advancing Canada’s Indo-Pacific strategy. “This visit reinforces Canada’s commitment to diversifying trade relationships and attracting new investments. India, as one of the world’s fastest-growing major economies, offers significant opportunities for Canadian businesses and workers,” Sidhu said in an official statement.
Bilateral Trade Crosses $30 Billion Mark
According to official figures, India-Canada bilateral trade surpassed $30 billion in 2024, making India Canada’s seventh-largest trading partner. Both nations expect this figure to rise sharply as collaboration grows in technology, green energy, and innovation-driven sectors.
Officials also discussed potential areas for joint investments in infrastructure, education, and sustainable industries, further enhancing the two-way flow of capital and expertise.

Jaishankar-Anand Talks at G7 Meeting in Niagara
Meanwhile, on the sidelines of the G7 Foreign Ministers’ Meeting in Niagara, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar met with his Canadian counterpart Anita Anand. Both ministers explored new avenues of cooperation in trade, energy security, and innovation.
EAM Jaishankar expressed optimism about the New Roadmap 2025, noting that both countries were making steady progress in rebuilding a stronger and more resilient partnership.

With the global economy shifting toward digitalization and sustainability, India and Canada are positioning themselves as strategic economic partners in the Indo-Pacific region. The renewed trade dialogue signals not only an effort to rebuild trust but also to tap into the enormous untapped potential between the two democracies.
