Strengthening its growing leadership in global artificial intelligence governance, India will host the India-AI Impact Summit 2026 from February 16 to 20 in New Delhi, the government confirmed on Wednesday. The high-profile international event will focus on developing actionable recommendations for responsible and inclusive AI development, rather than creating immediate binding regulations.

Union Minister of State for Electronics and Information Technology Jitin Prasada, addressing the Lok Sabha, said the summit marks a historic shift as it will be the first global AI summit held in the Global South.

India’s Inclusive Vision for AI
The minister said the summit aligns with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of democratising technology to solve real-world challenges across sectors such as healthcare, agriculture, education, governance and the economy.
> “The focus is on using AI for solving real-world problems and ultimately improving lives across various sectors,” Prasada said.
India’s AI policy framework, he added, is based on a balanced and pragmatic techno-legal approach, developed after studying global regulatory systems and through extensive stakeholder consultations. The government aims to promote innovation-friendly governance while ensuring safety, transparency and accountability.

Focus on Long-Term Policy, Not Immediate Regulation
Unlike summits that aim to produce immediate regulatory frameworks, the India-AI Impact Summit 2026 is designed to deliver long-term, actionable policy recommendations that can guide future governance models both nationally and globally.
“The intention is to contribute to global cooperation on responsible AI development while ensuring flexibility for innovation,” the minister said.
Why the Summit Matters
Experts believe hosting the summit establishes India as:
A bridge between advanced economies and developing nations in AI governance
A key driver of ethical, safe and inclusive AI adoption
