The Government of India on Saturday conducted a nationwide test of its indigenous mobile emergency alert system aimed at enhancing public safety during natural disasters and emergencies. The system, known as Cell Broadcast Alert, is being tested across the country to assess its readiness before full-scale implementation.

What Is the Emergency Alert System?

The alert system is part of the Integrated Alert System called SACHET, developed by the Centre for Development of Telematics (C-DOT). It allows authorities to send real-time emergency notifications directly to mobile phones in targeted geographic areas.

The test alerts were issued by the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), India’s apex disaster management body.

During the test, users received a flash SMS accompanied by a loud alarm tone and a pop-up message stating that it was only a trial and required no action.

How the Alert Works

The system uses Cell Broadcast technology, which enables messages to be sent to multiple mobile users simultaneously without network congestion. It is based on the Common Alerting Protocol (CAP), recommended globally for emergency communication systems.

Unlike standard SMS, these alerts are location-specific and can reach all compatible devices in an affected area instantly—even during network overload situations.

Designed for Disasters and Emergencies

The mobile alert system is intended to warn citizens about a wide range of threats, including earthquakes, tsunamis, lightning strikes, floods, cyclones, and man-made hazards such as gas leaks or chemical emergencies.

By delivering timely alerts, the system aims to reduce casualties and improve emergency response efficiency.

Why the Nationwide Testing?

Authorities have previously conducted limited trials, but the current pan-India testing is aimed at evaluating the system’s performance, reliability, and reach across diverse regions and mobile networks.

Officials clarified that these are test alerts and urged citizens not to panic upon receiving them.

What’s Next?

Following the testing phase, the government plans to roll out the system nationwide. Once operational, it will send alerts in multiple Indian languages, ensuring accessibility for people across different regions.

The initiative marks a significant step toward strengthening India’s disaster preparedness framework by leveraging modern telecom infrastructure.
