Govt Reassures Aadhaar Security:
The government on Wednesday informed Parliament that there has been no breach of Aadhaar card holders’ data from the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) database till date, reaffirming the security of the world’s largest biometric identity system.
Responding to a question in the Lok Sabha, Union Minister of State for Electronics and Information Technology Jitin Prasada said Aadhaar continues to remain secure due to robust technological and institutional safeguards implemented by the government.

World’s Largest Biometric Identity System
According to the ministry, Aadhaar is the largest biometric identity programme in the world, with approximately 134 crore live Aadhaar number holders. Since its launch, the system has processed over 16,000 crore authentication transactions, underlining its scale and critical role in governance and service delivery.
The minister emphasised that despite its massive size and extensive usage, Aadhaar has remained secure with no data breach reported from UIDAI’s central database.
Multi-Layered ‘Defence-in-Depth’ Security Framework
Explaining the security architecture, the government said UIDAI follows a multi-layered security framework based on a “defence-in-depth” approach. This means multiple levels of protection are embedded within the system to ensure that even if one layer is compromised, additional safeguards continue to protect personal data.
The entire Aadhaar ecosystem is subjected to regular reviews and audits to ensure the system remains secure against emerging cyber threats.
Advanced Encryption and Continuous Monitoring
To prevent misuse, interception or unauthorised access, Aadhaar data is protected using advanced encryption technologies, both during transmission and while stored. These measures ensure that sensitive biometric and demographic information remains secure at all stages.
The Aadhaar system has also been declared a protected system, placing it under the continuous surveillance of the National Critical Information Infrastructure Protection Centre (NCIIPC). The agency regularly issues security advisories to further strengthen UIDAI’s cybersecurity posture.

Independent Audits and Cybersecurity Testing
In addition to internal safeguards, an independent audit agency has been engaged to develop and monitor a comprehensive Governance, Risk, Compliance and Performance (GRCP) framework for the Aadhaar ecosystem.
The minister informed the House that UIDAI conducts continuous cybersecurity audits of its applications, including both static and dynamic security testing, to identify and address vulnerabilities at an early stage.
Government Reassurance on Data Protection
Reiterating the government’s commitment to data security and privacy, the ministry said that Aadhaar remains a secure, resilient and trusted digital identity platform, playing a crucial role in welfare delivery, financial inclusion and digital governance.
