Cyclone Ditwah disrupted normal life across Tamil Nadu’s Ramanathapuram district on Saturday, bringing strong winds, high tides, and steady rainfall that crippled transport routes and prompted precautionary evacuations in vulnerable coastal pockets.

Authorities reported wind speeds of 65–70 kmph along the Ramanathapuram shoreline, forcing Southern Railway to suspend train services across the iconic Pamban sea bridge, a critical link between Mandapam and Rameswaram.

Rail Services Halted Across Pamban Sea Bridge
With safety concerns mounting, trains from Chennai, Kanyakumari, and Madurai heading toward Rameswaram were halted at Mandapam station.
Government-arranged buses transported stranded passengers to the island to ensure minimal disruption.
Railway officials confirmed that services originating from Rameswaram would also operate temporarily from Mandapam, pending improved weather conditions.
> “Operations will resume only after wind speeds fall below danger levels and structural safety is assured,” officials added.
Coastal Areas Face Strong Winds, Boat Damage
Heavy gusts and persistent rain battered Rameswaram, Pamban, and Mandapam, triggering panic among fishing communities.
The district recorded 2 cm of rainfall by Friday afternoon, but high tides caused significant damage:
A mechanised fishing boat broke loose at Rameswaram harbour and washed ashore at Serankottai.
Coastal erosion intensified along exposed stretches.
Several country boats were dragged into the sea.
Fishermen ventured into the rough seas to salvage their drifting boats despite the hazards.

Evacuations Begin as Winds Pose Threat
Ramanathapuram District Collector Simranjeet Singh Kahlon reviewed cyclone preparedness measures across coastal hamlets.
> “The coastal belt is witnessing winds of 50–70 kmph. For safety, 40 residents from Dhanushkodi have been shifted to the government school in Rameswaram,” he said.
He added that disaster teams were stationed across villages and evacuations would escalate if sea conditions worsened.
Tourist entry to Dhanushkodi, a popular but fragile stretch, has been suspended until further notice. Police erected barricades on Pudu Road, turning back visitors attempting to reach the tip of Rameswaram island.
Authorities on High Alert as Cyclone Moves Northward
As Cyclone Ditwah continues its northward trajectory over the Bay of Bengal, district authorities remain vigilant, monitoring:
