Rashtriya Vigyan Puraskar 2025:
The Union Government on Tuesday announced the Rashtriya Vigyan Puraskar 2025, recognising India’s top scientists and innovators for their exceptional achievements in science, technology, and innovation.

The annual awards celebrate India’s leading minds whose contributions continue to strengthen the country’s scientific foundation and inspire the next generation of researchers.

Four Prestigious Categories Recognising Scientific Excellence
According to the Ministry of Science and Technology, the Rashtriya Vigyan Puraskar is presented in four categories:
Vigyan Ratna: for lifetime contributions to science and technology.
Vigyan Shri: for exceptional achievements in specific fields.
Vigyan Yuva – Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Award: for young scientists under 45 years.
Vigyan Team Award: for outstanding collaborative research.
The awards span 13 scientific disciplines, including physics, chemistry, biological sciences, engineering, medicine, and space technology.
Jayant Narlikar Receives Vigyan Ratna Posthumously
Legendary astrophysicist Professor Jayant Vishnu Narlikar has been posthumously honoured with the 2025 Vigyan Ratna Award, in recognition of his lifetime contributions to Indian science and cosmology.
Narlikar’s pioneering work in theoretical astrophysics and his role in popularising science among the public have left a lasting impact on India’s scientific landscape.
Vigyan Shri Awardees: Leaders Across Key Disciplines
Recipients of the Vigyan Shri Award include:
1.Dr Gyanendra Pratap Singh (Agricultural Science)
2.Dr Yusuf Mohammad Seikh (Atomic Energy)
3.Dr K. Thangaraj (Biological Sciences)
4.Prof. Pradeep Thalappil (Chemistry)
5.Prof. Aniruddha Bhalchandra Pandit (Engineering Sciences)
6.Dr S. Venkata Mohan (Environmental Science)
7.Prof. Mahan Mj (Mathematics & Computer Science)
8.Jayan N (Space Science & Technology)
Young Innovators Recognised in Vigyan Yuva Category
Fifteen young researchers were named winners of the Vigyan Yuva – Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Award 2025, including Dr Jagdis Gupta Kapuganti, Dr Deepa Agashe, Dr Dibyendu Das, Prof. Sabyasachi Mukherjee, and Prof. Amit Kumar Agarwal, among others.
These scientists represent the next generation of Indian innovation, contributing cutting-edge research across disciplines from agriculture and medicine to physics and engineering.
CSIR’s Aroma Mission Team Wins Team Award
The CSIR Aroma Mission Team received the Vigyan Team Award for its path-breaking work in agricultural science, particularly in promoting sustainable cultivation of aromatic crops and enhancing farmer income.

Celebrating India’s Scientific Spirit
Congratulating the winners, Abhay Karandikar, Secretary of the Department of Science and Technology, said:
> “These awards reflect the spirit of curiosity, creativity, and commitment that defines Indian science. They not only honour individual excellence but also inspire a new generation to explore new frontiers of knowledge.”
The Rashtriya Vigyan Puraskar awards were selected by a national committee chaired by the Principal Scientific Advisor to the Government of India. The award ceremony will be held later this year.
