The Cooperative Election Authority (CEA) today held its first consultative meeting with State Cooperative Election Authorities in New Delhi, aimed at ensuring free, fair, and transparent elections in cooperative societies across India.

The meeting, chaired by Shri Devendra Kumar Singh, Chairperson of CEA, brought together State Election Commissioners from Odisha, Bihar, Tamil Nadu, Telangana, and Maharashtra, along with senior officials including Shri R.K. Gupta (Vice Chairperson), Shri Alok Agarwal (Cooperative Ombudsman), and Shri Anand Kumar Jha (Joint Secretary, Ministry of Cooperation).
Key Highlights of the Meeting
1. Development of a Code of Conduct for candidates and cooperative bodies.
2. Proposal to introduce Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) in cooperative elections.
3. Fixing an upper limit on election expenditure for candidates.
4. Publishing a handbook for Returning Officers.
5. Streamlining delegate elections in Multi-State Cooperative Societies (MSCs).
6. Discussions on share capital norms, candidate symbols, and use of indelible ink.
Shri Devendra Kumar Singh highlighted that under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and guidance of Union Home Minister & Minister of Cooperation Amit Shah, the cooperative sector has seen significant reforms, including the establishment of the CEA in March 2024 under the Multi-State Cooperative Societies Act.

Since its inception, the CEA has conducted 159 elections and is in the process of conducting 69 more. The meeting also emphasized that 2025 is being celebrated as the International Year of Cooperatives, marking a renewed push for governance reforms in the sector.
The CEA announced it will hold such consultative meetings every three months to track progress and implement new measures for fair and transparent cooperative elections.
