In a major shake-up to India’s cricket leadership, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has officially removed Rohit Sharma as the ODI captain, naming Shubman Gill as his successor. The announcement came on Saturday, as chief selector Ajit Agarkar unveiled India’s squad for the upcoming three-match ODI series against Australia, starting October 19 in Perth.
BCCI’s Strategic Move for the Future
According to sources within the selection committee, the decision is part of a long-term roadmap to prepare a younger leader for the 2027 ODI World Cup, which will be hosted across South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Namibia.

“Shubman Gill has shown maturity beyond his years. The management and selectors believe he can guide Team India into a new era of consistency and aggression,” a BCCI insider said after the meeting chaired by Ajit Agarkar.
With this move, Gill now becomes India’s captain in two formats — Tests and ODIs — and continues as the vice-captain in T20 Internationals, strengthening his role as the face of the team’s next generation.

Rohit Sharma’s Transition After Test Retirement
Rohit Sharma, who retired from Test cricket earlier this year, had been training extensively in Mumbai to maintain peak form for the Australia tour. Under the guidance of former Team India assistant coach Abhishek Nayar, Rohit was focusing on fitness and batting rhythm.
However, the selectors, in consultation with head coach Gautam Gambhir, decided to make the transition now to ensure a smooth leadership shift before major international tournaments in 2026 and 2027.
“Rohit has served Indian cricket with unmatched passion. But it’s time to groom future leaders who can carry the momentum forward,” Agarkar was quoted as saying.
Gill’s Rise as a Modern Leader
The 26-year-old opener has been widely praised for his calm demeanor, tactical awareness, and consistency with the bat. His leadership debut in the Test arena earlier this year was well-received, with teammates lauding his composed and analytical captaincy style.
India will face Australia in three ODIs beginning in Perth on October 19, followed by games in Adelaide and Melbourne. All eyes will now be on Gill as he steps into the leadership spotlight, carrying the expectations of a billion fans and the responsibility of shaping India’s World Cup destiny.
