In a major boost to women-led entrepreneurship, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Monday distributed ₹10,000 seed capital cheques to 32,787 Self Help Group (SHG) members under the Mukhya Mantri Mahila Udyamita Abhiyan in Rangia. The initiative aims to strengthen women’s financial independence and expand livelihood opportunities across the state.

Among the beneficiaries, 30,665 women are from rural areas, while 2,122 are from urban areas of the Rangia Legislative Assembly Constituency.

Inauguration of Key Development Projects in Rangia
During his visit, the Chief Minister inaugurated several infrastructure projects, including:
Shantiram Lahkar Park in Ward No. 4.A life-sized statue of freedom fighter Shantiram Lahkar.A commemorative book release in Lahkar’s memory.A newly built clock tower inside the park.A PWD inspection bungalow in Rangia.New offices of North Kamrup Road Division and Subdivision.The park honours Shantiram Lahkar, Rangia’s first freedom fighter and a key figure in shaping modern Rangia.
Tributes to Bir Lachit Borphukan
The programme began with CM Sarma paying homage to Bir Lachit Borphukan on his birth anniversary.
Calling him “a brave son of Mother Assam,” Sarma urged the youth to draw inspiration from Lachit’s courage, which led the Ahom army to historic victory over the Mughals.
Vision: Creating ‘Lakhpati’ and ‘Maha Lakhpati’ Women
CM Sarma reiterated Assam’s commitment to PM Modi’s vision of turning three crore Indian women into ‘lakhpati entrepreneurs’.
He highlighted that:
Many SHG women in Assam have already become lakhpati.Several have advanced further as Maha Lakhpati Baideus, earning over ₹10 lakh annually.Assam aims to distribute seed capital to 32 lakh women by January.
Seed Capital Instalment Plan
1. 1st instalment: ₹10,000
2. 2nd instalment: ₹25,000 (based on productive use of first instalment)
3. 3rd instalment: ₹50,000 (after satisfactory performance in first two phases)
Guidelines for Using the Seed Fund
CM Sarma advised beneficiaries on effective fund utilisation:
Savings may be deposited into SHG groups to build joint capital.Funds can be combined with bank loans for larger ventures.Women may start individual businesses or expand family enterprises.Government will review utilisation within 6–7 months.

Success Stories From Rangia
Sarma highlighted inspiring examples from the constituency:
Namita Kalita, Manikanchan SHG (Akashiganga CLF), earns ₹12,000/month running a restaurant and food business
Babita Choudhury, Sowarshiri SHG (Mahiyoshi CLF), earns ₹15,000/month through her local enterprise
These women, he said, embody Assam’s growing entrepreneurial spirit.
Broader Welfare Initiatives
The Chief Minister also noted progress on various state schemes:
3,000 more women to be added to Orunodoi soon.33,784 families in Rangia currently benefit from Orunodoi.40,178 families have received free LPG connections.4,376 girl students supported under Nijut Moina.Over 1 lakh government jobs provided through a transparent merit-based process.Free bicycles for Class IX girls, scooters for college students, and subsidised essential commodities including sugar, salt, lentils, and free rice.Sarma said these initiatives aim to enhance women’s empowerment, education, and financial security across Assam.
