Assam CM Awards Rs 10 Lakh & Govt Job:
In a landmark gesture for inclusivity and sports empowerment, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Saturday awarded ₹10 lakh in financial assistance and promised a government job to Indian blind women’s cricket star Simu Das, honouring her remarkable contribution to the sport. The announcement stands as one of the most significant recognitions ever given to a visually impaired woman cricketer in India.

Simu Das, categorized as B1 (totally blind), was a member of the Indian blind women’s cricket team that made history by winning the first-ever Blind Women’s T20 World Cup, bringing global pride to the nation.

A Historic Move for Inclusion and Equal Opportunity
The Chief Minister said the decision reflects the state’s commitment to uplifting talented sportspersons, regardless of physical challenges. The support extended to Simu marks a transformational moment for blind cricket and women athletes with disabilities across India.
Simu’s life journey has been filled with hardship and resilience. Born completely blind, she was raised in an economically struggling family. With her mother as the only earning member, Simu grew up without a permanent home and supported her brother, who is both blind and deaf.
Despite adversity, she chose not to surrender to limitations but instead pursued education and sport with immense determination. She discovered cricket through Cricket Association for the Blind in India (CABI) and Samarthanam Trust for the Disabled, where she trained rigorously and earned her place in the national team.

“The most emotional day of my life,” says Simu
Reacting to the recognition, Simu shared her gratitude and emotions:
> “Today is the most emotional day of my life. I come from a family that has struggled for everything. There were times I felt my dreams were too big for someone like me. But this honour from our Hon’ble Chief Minister has given me a new identity. Thank you for seeing not my blindness, but my potential.”
She also thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi for inspiring people with disabilities to rise above circumstances, and expressed appreciation for CABI and Samarthanam Trust for discovering and training her.
A Milestone for Blind Cricket in India
Speaking on the decision, Dr. G.K. Mahantesh, President of CABI, said:
> “This is not only a reward for Simu’s talent and dedication, but a turning point for blind cricket in India. The commitment to inclusion from the Hon’ble Chief Minister will inspire countless visually impaired girls to dream big.”
Simu’s recognition is widely viewed as a motivational milestone that could drive stronger support structures for differently-abled athletes in India.
Her story is now a shining example of what persistence and opportunity can achieve — a reminder that true vision lies not in eyesight, but in courage.
