Artificial Intelligence Revolution:
Artificial Intelligence (AI) is transforming India’s market landscape, altering business competition, operations, and regulatory frameworks, according to a comprehensive study released by the Competition Commission of India (CCI) on Monday.

The study, titled “Market Study on Artificial Intelligence and Competition,” underscores that while AI brings unprecedented efficiency, innovation, and consumer benefits, it also poses new competition and compliance challenges that India must address to ensure fair markets.

AI Driving Market Transformation Across Sectors
The CCI report, conducted in collaboration with the Management Development Institute Society (MDIS), provides a detailed overview of AI’s influence on Indian markets and user industries. It examines how AI is redefining production models, business processes, and market structures across sectors such as finance, healthcare, manufacturing, retail, and digital services.
Using both primary and secondary research methods, including stakeholder surveys, literature reviews, and expert interviews, the study aimed to map the AI ecosystem’s structure, emerging trends, and potential competition issues.
“The study has helped gather useful insights on the AI ecosystem, market trends, application in user industries, and potential anti-competitive risks,” the CCI noted in its statement.
Regulatory Evolution and Global Benchmarks
The report also compares India’s evolving legal and regulatory frameworks with international practices to identify best approaches for AI governance. It stresses that existing competition laws may need adaptation to keep pace with rapidly advancing AI systems, algorithmic decision-making, and market concentration among digital giants.
The CCI highlighted the need for a balanced regulatory approach that supports innovation while safeguarding fair competition. “There is a necessity to maintain responsible autonomy and prevent distortions that could arise from unchecked AI deployment,” the report stated.

Proposed Measures: Self-Audit, Transparency & Global Collaboration
To promote a competitive and transparent AI environment, the CCI has recommended several proactive measures:
1.Enterprise self-audit of AI systems to identify and mitigate competition concerns.
2.Transparency initiatives to reduce information asymmetry in AI-driven markets.
3.Formation of a think tank focused on digital and AI market regulation.
4.Advocacy workshops on AI and competition compliance.
5.Inter-regulatory coordination among government agencies.
6.Global engagement with competition authorities and multilateral AI platforms.
The Commission also plans to host a conference on “AI and Regulatory Issues” to engage policymakers, technologists, and industry leaders in shaping India’s AI governance roadmap.
Balancing Innovation with Accountability
As India emerges as a major AI adopter, the CCI’s study serves as a call to action for responsible innovation, urging enterprises and regulators to work together to ensure that AI growth does not compromise competition or consumer welfare.
