Adani-IHC Unveil $11.5 Billion Aluminium Project:

In one of the largest foreign investment announcements in India’s industrial sector, Adani Enterprises Limited (AEL) and Abu Dhabi-based International Resources Holding (IRH), an IHC Group company, have proposed a ₹1.08 lakh crore ($11.5 billion) integrated greenfield aluminium project in Odisha. The investment is expected to generate around 53,500 jobs while strengthening India’s position in the global aluminium supply chain.

Odisha Set to Receive Its Largest FDI Proposal

The proposed project, structured as a 50:50 joint venture between Adani Enterprises and IRH, is expected to become Odisha’s largest-ever foreign direct investment (FDI) proposal and India’s biggest FDI in the metallurgy sector.

The mega project will be developed in two phases, with investments of ₹66,000 crore and ₹44,000 crore respectively. It aims to establish a fully integrated aluminium ecosystem, covering every stage of production—from mining and refining to aluminium smelting and downstream manufacturing.

Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi described the investment as a milestone for the state, stating that Odisha is now poised to emerge as a global centre for aluminium and value-added manufacturing. He said the project would help create greater industrial value within the state while strengthening its leadership in India’s metals and minerals sector.

Integrated Manufacturing Ecosystem

According to Adani Enterprises, the project will include:

Key Components

  • A 4 million metric tonnes per annum (MMTPA) alumina refinery.
  • A 2 MMTPA aluminium smelter.
  • A 4,000 MW captive power plant.
  • A 1 MMTPA downstream aluminium manufacturing park.
  • Supporting industrial and logistics infrastructure.

The integrated approach is expected to improve supply chain efficiency and enhance India’s competitiveness in global aluminium production.

Over 53,500 Employment Opportunities

The project is expected to create approximately 35,000 jobs during the construction phase. Once operational, mining, refining, aluminium production and downstream manufacturing activities are projected to support an additional 18,500 direct jobs.

Apart from direct employment, the investment is also expected to generate substantial indirect opportunities in logistics, engineering, maintenance and ancillary industries across Odisha.

Adani and IHC Strengthen Strategic Partnership

Karan Adani, Managing Director of Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone (APSEZ) and Director of Adani Cement, said the proposed joint venture reflects the group’s long-term confidence in Odisha as a manufacturing destination. He added that the partnership with IHC aims to build a world-class integrated aluminium ecosystem that creates employment, expands value-added manufacturing and enhances India’s industrial competitiveness.

IHC Group CEO Syed Basar Shueb said the investment aligns with IRH’s strategy of building an integrated mine-to-market minerals business focused on supporting industrial development, resilient supply chains and the global energy transition.

The announcement further strengthens the growing partnership between the Adani Group and IHC. Earlier this year, IHC’s ePointZero entered into a joint venture with Adani Green Energy to develop renewable energy projects across India.

Once completed, the integrated aluminium project is expected to significantly boost Odisha’s industrial growth while reinforcing India’s ambition to become a leading global manufacturing and metals powerhouse.
