According to the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), the leaders reviewed the significant progress achieved in India-EU relations since the landmark 16th India-EU Summit held in New Delhi in January 2026. The meeting underscored the growing strategic partnership between the world’s two largest democracies and highlighted their shared commitment to economic growth, stability and global cooperation.

India-EU FTA Takes Centre Stage

A key focus of the discussions was the recently concluded India-EU Free Trade Agreement, which both sides described as a historic achievement. The leaders stressed the need for its swift signing and implementation, noting that the agreement would create substantial opportunities for trade, investment and supply chain diversification amid ongoing geopolitical uncertainties.

The MEA stated that the agreement represents a major milestone in bilateral ties and is expected to significantly enhance economic cooperation between India and the European Union.

Progress on Strategic Partnership

The three leaders also reviewed progress on the Joint India-EU Comprehensive Strategic Agenda, endorsed during the India-EU Summit earlier this year.

According to the MEA, both sides expressed confidence that the agenda would further strengthen the India-EU strategic partnership and deliver transformative outcomes across sectors including trade, technology, connectivity, security and sustainable development.

Discussions on West Asia and Global Issues

The meeting also featured an exchange of views on regional and global developments, particularly recent developments in West Asia.

PM Modi, Costa and von der Leyen reaffirmed their shared commitment to promoting a resilient multipolar global order that supports peace, stability, prosperity and sustainable development.
