New Delhi, June 6 – In a significant diplomatic development, Canada’s Prime Minister-designate Mark Carney has officially extended an invitation to Prime Minister Narendra Modi to attend the upcoming G7 Summit, scheduled for June 2025 in Canada.

“Glad to receive a call from Prime Minister (Carney) … thanked him for the invitation to the G7 Summit,” Modi said in a post on X.
Modi also stated in his post on Friday that India and Canada would work together “with renewed vigour, guided by mutual respect and shared interests.”
Carney, who is poised to take charge as Canada’s Prime Minister this month, emphasized India’s growing global influence and strategic role in shaping global economic and environmental policies. The invitation signals Canada’s intent to strengthen ties with India and reinforce multilateral cooperation on critical global issues including climate change, trade, AI governance, and geopolitical stability.

India is not a G7 member but can be invited as a guest to its annual gathering, which will be held this year in Kananaskis in the Canadian province of Alberta, from June 15 to 17.
Sources close to the matter revealed that India is being considered as a special invitee, acknowledging its role as a major voice of the Global South and an emerging power with a pivotal role in shaping the world’s future.
“Canada looks forward to welcoming Prime Minister Modi at the G7 Summit. India’s participation is crucial to shaping a balanced global agenda,” said a Canadian official.
If accepted, PM Modi’s visit would mark a key moment in India-Canada relations, especially amid ongoing diplomatic recalibrations between the two nations.
