A senior leader of the (BJP), on Tuesday joined nationwide protests organised by the (NDA) against the defeat of the Constitution (131st Amendment) Bill, which sought to provide reservation for women in the Lok Sabha and state Assemblies.

Pankaja Munde Calls Bill’s Defeat “Unfortunate”

Addressing a press conference, Pankaja Munde termed the failure of the Bill as “unfortunate” and said women across the country have expressed disappointment over the development.

“Women in large numbers are messaging us expressing their disappointment. In order to support them and condemn this, we will take to the streets,” she said.

Demand for Greater Political Representation

Munde emphasised that while women already have reservation in local bodies, they also deserve representation in higher decision-making institutions like Parliament and state Assemblies.

“Giving women reservation is not a favour but their right,” she asserted, stressing the importance of inclusive governance.

Opposition Blamed for Bill’s Failure

The BJP leader accused opposition parties, including the , , , and , of blocking the passage of the Bill.

She alleged that these parties had opposed the legislation and even “celebrated” its failure, a claim that has further intensified political tensions.

Women’s Anger and Political Impact

Munde claimed that women voters are expressing anger over the issue on social media and messaging platforms, viewing the Bill’s defeat as a setback to their political empowerment.

She added that the NDA would continue to raise the issue and represent the concerns of women across the country, warning that voters could respond strongly in future elections.

Delimitation and Future Prospects

Commenting on the proposed delimitation exercise, Munde described it as a “rule-bound process” necessary due to population growth since Independence. She criticised the Opposition for using it as an excuse to oppose the Bill.

NDA leaders and workers have organised protest marches and demonstrations across multiple states, aiming to mobilise public opinion in favour of women’s reservation.
