Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov is set to visit India in May 2026 to participate in a crucial BRICS foreign ministers’ meeting, according to statements from Russian officials. The visit is expected to play a key role in shaping the agenda for the upcoming BRICS Summit under India’s presidency.

Lavrov’s Visit for BRICS Ministerial
Russia’s Deputy Foreign Minister Andrey Rudenko confirmed that Lavrov will attend the BRICS ministerial meeting scheduled for May 14–15 in India. The meeting will focus on finalizing the framework and key documents that will be presented at the BRICS Summit later this year.
The visit highlights the growing importance of BRICS as a platform for coordination among emerging economies, especially amid shifting global geopolitical dynamics.
Bilateral Talks with India
Alongside the multilateral engagement, Lavrov is also expected to hold a separate working visit in India. During this, he will meet External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar and other senior Indian officials.

India’s BRICS Chairship in Focus
India currently holds the BRICS chair for 2026, guided by the theme: “Building for Resilience, Innovation, Cooperation and Sustainability.” This reflects a people-centric and “humanity-first” approach, as articulated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi during the 17th BRICS Summit held in Rio de Janeiro in 2025.
External Affairs Minister Jaishankar has reiterated India’s commitment to deepening engagement with Russia and other BRICS members. He emphasized that in an evolving multipolar world, stronger cooperation through platforms like BRICS, SCO, G20, and the United Nations is essential.

Expanding BRICS Influence
BRICS has grown significantly since its inception. Originally formed as BRIC in 2006, the grouping expanded to include South Africa in 2010, becoming BRICS.
In recent years, the bloc has further expanded its membership. Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates joined as full members in January 2024, followed by Indonesia in January 2025. Additionally, several countries, including Belarus, Bolivia, Kazakhstan, Cuba, Malaysia, Nigeria, Thailand, Uganda, Uzbekistan, and Vietnam, joined as partner nations in 2025.
This expansion underscores BRICS’ increasing global influence and its role in shaping a more balanced international order.
