India Eyes 2036 Olympics:
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday said India is making strong and sustained efforts to host the 2036 Olympic Games, underlining the country’s growing ambitions in global sports. He made these remarks while addressing the inaugural ceremony of the 72nd National Volleyball Championship virtually via video conferencing.

Speaking from Varanasi, the Prime Minister highlighted India’s expanding capability to host major international sporting events and said the nation is preparing “with full strength” to secure the hosting rights for the Olympics.

India’s Global Sporting Credentials
PM Modi pointed out that over 20 major international sporting events have been successfully hosted across various Indian cities in the past decade. These include prestigious tournaments such as the FIFA U-17 World Cup, the Hockey World Cup, and several international chess championships.
“In the last 10 years, India has demonstrated its ability to host global sporting events successfully,” the Prime Minister said, stressing that this experience strengthens India’s bid for the Olympics.
He added that India’s sports infrastructure, organisational capacity, and athlete ecosystem have witnessed significant improvements over the years.
Road to 2036: Commonwealth Games and Beyond
The Prime Minister also referred to the 2030 Commonwealth Games, which are set to be held in India, calling it a crucial milestone in the country’s Olympic journey.
“The 2030 Commonwealth Games will be held in India. The country is leaving no stone unturned in its efforts to host the 2036 Olympic Games,” Modi said.
According to experts, hosting the Commonwealth Games will further bolster India’s credentials in the international sporting community and serve as a rehearsal for larger multi-sport events like the Olympics.

During his address, PM Modi spoke passionately about the importance of volleyball, describing it as a sport that symbolises balance, cooperation, and team spirit.
He said volleyball is not just about individual skills but about collective effort, where every player works under the guiding principle of “Team First.” The Prime Minister noted that the determination to keep the ball in play reflects perseverance and unity.
National Volleyball Championship Highlights
The 72nd National Volleyball Championship, being held from January 4 to January 11, features participation from over 1,000 players across 58 teams, representing states and institutions from across the country.
The tournament is expected to showcase high levels of competition, sportsmanship, and emerging talent, while also strengthening the city’s reputation as a venue for major national sporting events.
