S. Jaishankar Strengthens India-Germany Ties During Strategic Visit to Berlin

Berlin, May 2025 – External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar concluded a high-impact visit to Germany, underscoring the deepening of the India-Germany Strategic Partnership across key areas including trade, defense, green energy, and global security.

Dr. Jaishankar met with his German counterpart, Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock, in Berlin, where the two leaders reaffirmed their commitment to a multi-dimensional partnership. Their discussions touched upon pressing international issues such as the ongoing conflicts in Ukraine and Gaza, the Indo-Pacific’s stability, and global counterterrorism efforts.

Strengthening Defense and Security Ties

A major focus of the dialogue was bolstering defense collaboration. Both nations agreed to intensify cooperation on joint defense production, technology transfers, and maritime security—particularly in the Indo-Pacific region. Cybersecurity also emerged as a critical area of mutual interest.

Boosting Economic and Technological Cooperation

Economic engagement was another major agenda item. Talks included accelerating progress on the long-awaited EU-India Free Trade Agreement. In addition, both sides explored partnerships in semiconductors, electric mobility, and digital infrastructure—sectors that are key to their shared technological ambitions.

Green and Sustainable Development Partnership

Germany reaffirmed its €10 billion commitment to India under the Green and Sustainable Development Partnership (GSDP), supporting India’s energy transition goals. The funding will aid projects in renewable energy, green hydrogen production, and sustainable urban development through 2030.

Migration and Talent Exchange

The leaders also reviewed the Migration and Mobility Partnership Agreement, signed in 2022. This pact facilitates easier movement for skilled professionals and students between the two countries, aligning with Germany’s need for talent in IT, engineering, and healthcare sectors.

Counterterrorism and Strategic Autonomy

During a public address, Jaishankar firmly stated India’s unwavering stance against terrorism, reiterating its zero-tolerance policy and opposition to any form of nuclear blackmail. “India will deal with Pakistan bilaterally—there should be no confusion,” he asserted. German officials echoed support, affirming India’s right to defend itself against terror threats.

A Renewed Global Vision

The visit marks a significant step in India and Germany’s evolving global partnership, reflecting their shared values and a joint vision for a secure, sustainable, and multipolar world order.
