Prerona Scheme: Assam’s Rs 300 Stipend for Class-10 Students

The Assam government on Friday unveiled a new support initiative for Class 10 board examinees. Named “Prerona Scheme”, the scheme will provide ₹300 per month to eligible students until their exams conclude — a move aimed at ensuring basic amenities such as nutrition, stationery, and study materials. Officials say the first stipend has already been disbursed, and board exams are scheduled for February next year.

Why ‘Prerona Scheme’ Was Launched

During the launch, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma emphasized that many matriculation aspirants come from economically challenged backgrounds and often lack essentials like books, notebooks, stationery — and in some cases, even a simple cup of milk. “This scheme will ensure they are not deprived of the basics and are able to appear for the examination in the right frame of mind,” he said.

The government estimates that the scheme will benefit around 4.4 lakh students appearing for the High School Leaving Certificate (HSLC) under the Assam State School Education Board (ASSEB), as well as Class 10 students studying under Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) in Adarsha Vidyalayas and domiciled in Assam — regardless of their economic status.

What the Scheme Offers

Under the “Prerona” programme:

Each eligible student receives ₹300 every month until board exams.

The stipend is intended to cover essentials like nutritious food, notebooks, stationery, and other basic needs.

The first tranche has already been credited for this month.

Sarma urged students to focus on their studies, reassuring them that “the government is there to take care of the financial part — you just study sincerely and appear for the examination with a positive attitude.”

Expected Impact: Reduced Dropouts, Better Performance

Officials and the CM predict that this financial support will help reduce stress among students from underprivileged backgrounds, potentially leading to a decline in dropout rates and an increase in overall pass percentages in board exams. Additionally, the scheme may encourage greater enrolment in government and provincialised schools as well as in Adarsha Vidyalayas across Assam.

Beyond secondary education, the government also plans to roll out supporting schemes for girls seeking admission to colleges — reinforcing its long-term commitment toward education and empowerment.

What It Means for Assam’s Students

By addressing economic barriers to education, “Prerona” aims to level the playing field for all Class 10 examinees. For many families, ₹300 per month may seem modest — but when multiplied across essentials like food, stationery, and peace of mind, it can make a significant difference. For Assam’s youth — particularly those from rural or economically disadvantaged backgrounds — this scheme offers hope, stability, and a chance to focus solely on studies without worrying about survival basics.

As the first stipends hit student accounts this month, all eyes will be on exam results come February — and on whether this small but steady financial boost delivers the larger goal: better educational outcomes and fewer dropouts across Assam.
