Agartala, November 15: Cooperatives play a vital role in strengthening financial and social development, said Chief Minister Prof. (Dr.) Manik Saha while inaugurating the 72nd All India Cooperative Week and the Cooperative Fair at the Purbasha Mela Ground on November 14. The event was jointly organized by the Cooperative Department and the Tripura State Cooperative Union.

Addressing the gathering, the Chief Minister emphasized that cooperatives are a people-centric movement that ensure financial empowerment, inclusive growth and justice at the grassroots level.
“Cooperatives are an alternative path to self-reliance for rural communities. To build a developed India, from villages to urban areas, we must strengthen the cooperative movement further,” he said.
Major Government Initiatives Highlighted
The Chief Minister outlined several key initiatives undertaken to modernize and strengthen the cooperative sector in Tripura:
- Computerization of PACS for transparent and efficient operations.
- Formation of new fisheries and dairy cooperatives to boost income opportunities.
- Establishment of Common Service Centres through PACS for digital service delivery.
- World’s largest decentralized grain storage project being developed under the cooperative sector.
- Formation of new Farmer Producer Organizations (FPOs) under PACS.
- Proposal for income-tax exemption for cooperatives under government consideration.
- Three new multistate cooperatives formed at the national level, aligning with the Prime Minister’s vision of a self-reliant India.
He also noted that 1,656 new cooperative societies have been formed in the state between 2018 and 2025, reflecting the growth of the sector. Cooperatives must adopt the One District, One Product (ODOP) approach and focus on stronger marketing strategies, he added.
Stress on Strengthening Cooperatives in Both Panchayat and ADC Areas
The Chief Minister urged cooperative societies to implement the key themes discussed during the cooperative week and to work more actively in panchayat as well as ADC regions.

Minister Noatia Highlights 54 New Cooperative Projects
Cooperative Minister Shuklacharan Noatia, speaking as the special guest, said cooperatives are the backbone of rural economic upliftment, especially in agriculture, handloom, dairy and fisheries. He announced that the Cooperative Department has taken up 54 new projects to further strengthen the sector.
Awards and Financial Support Distributed
During the event, the Chief Minister, Cooperative Minister, and other dignitaries handed out:
- Awards in 10 categories to top-performing cooperative societies.
- A cheque of ₹85.70 lakh to two cooperative societies.
- A Micro ATM device to a cooperative society to promote digital financial services.
4-Day Cooperative Fair Underway
A four-day Cooperative Fair is being held from November 14–17 at the Purbasha Mela premises. Following the inauguration, the Chief Minister and other guests visited all stalls of Newly formed MPACS and exhibitions showcasing cooperative products and initiatives.
