According to officials, the suspect — identified as Rohit Arya — had locked the group inside the building where the children had gathered for an audition. He reportedly claimed he wanted to “ask questions” to certain unnamed individuals and threatened to set the place on fire if police tried to intervene.

Mumbai Police Negotiation Turns into a Swift Rescue Operation

Deputy Commissioner of Police Datta Nalawade told reporters that officers initially attempted to negotiate with the suspect. “We tried to convince him to release the children peacefully, but he remained adamant. Our team then used force to gain entry,” he said.

Police entered the studio through a bathroom window after determining that the situation had become life-threatening. During the operation, officers recovered an airgun and an unspecified chemical from the site.

The suspect, Rohit Arya, was shot during the confrontation and later succumbed to his injuries in hospital, authorities confirmed.

Panic Among Parents and Locals

As news of the incident spread, parents and local residents gathered outside the acting school, anxiously waiting for updates. Videos aired on Indian news channels showed Rohit Arya recording himself inside the building, declaring that he had taken the children hostage and warning that “any wrong move will trigger me.”

The scene caused widespread panic in the busy Powai area, with police teams and ambulances rushing to the site to control the situation and ensure the children’s safety.

Children Safe, Investigation Underway

All 17 children and the two adults held captive were rescued safely and are now under medical observation, police said. The motive behind Arya’s actions remains unclear, and authorities are searching the premises for further evidence.

“The safety of the children was our top priority. Our officers acted swiftly and with great courage,” DCP Nalawade stated, praising the team involved in the rescue.

Investigations are ongoing to determine whether the suspect acted alone or had external influences.
