In an unprecedented display of spin dominance, the West Indies cricket team has etched their name into the record books by becoming the first side in ODI history to bowl an entire 50 overs using only spinners. The historic feat came during their match against Bangladesh at the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium in Mirpur on Tuesday.

Led by captain Shai Hope, the Caribbean side relied solely on spin from start to finish — a bold tactical move that paid off as they restricted Bangladesh to 213 for 7 in 50 overs.

Five Spinners Share the Workload

The West Indies deployed five spinners — Akeal Hosein, Roston Chase, Khary Pierre, Gudakesh Motie, and Alick Athanaze — each bowling their full quota of ten overs.

Alick Athanaze emerged as the most economical bowler with 2 for 14 in 10 overs,

while Gudakesh Motie took 3 wickets for 65 runs.
Together, the quintet delivered 300 balls of spin over three hours and 18 minutes, an extraordinary statistic in modern ODI cricket.

This strategy shattered the previous record held by Sri Lanka, who bowled 44 overs (264 balls) of spin against the West Indies in Port of Spain, 1996. On that occasion, the Lankan lineup included Muttiah Muralidaran, Sanath Jayasuriya, Upul Chandana, Kumar Dharmasena, and Hashan Tillakaratne.

Bangladesh Struggle on Spin-Friendly Surface

After winning the toss, Bangladesh opted to bat first on a surface that offered sharp turn and variable bounce. No batter managed to reach a half-century. Soumya Sarkar top-scored with 45 off 89 balls, while captain Mehidy Hasan Miraz remained unbeaten on 32.
A late flourish from Rishad Hossain (39* off 14 balls) helped Bangladesh cross the 200-run mark.

Despite having the option to use medium-pacer Justin Greaves, the West Indies stuck to their all-spin plan — a first-of-its-kind tactical decision in ODI cricket.

India’s Closest Spin Record

The record for the most overs of spin bowled by India in an ODI stands at 41.2 overs (248 balls), achieved against the West Indies in Indore (2011). The spin attack in that game featured Ravichandran Ashwin, Ravindra Jadeja, and Rahul Sharma, with part-timers Suresh Raina and Rohit Sharma also contributing.

A New Chapter in ODI History

This remarkable all-spin strategy highlights how teams are adapting to conditions and rethinking traditional bowling combinations. With the Mirpur pitch aiding turn, the West Indies’ decision not only surprised Bangladesh but also earned them a spot in cricketing history.
