Tripura Eyes Power Export to Nepal:

Tripura Eyes Power Export to Nepal, expanding its footprint as a regional energy supplier after successfully supplying power to Bangladesh, Power Minister Ratan Lal Nath announced on Thursday. The proposal now awaits the final clearance from the Central Government.

The announcement came during the inauguration of a 132 KV Gokulnagar Sub-Station in Sepahijala district — a ₹43.98 crore project built under the North Eastern Region Power System Improvement Project (NERPSIP). The facility is expected to ensure an uninterrupted and high-quality power supply to local consumers.

Rising Demand and Shrinking Gas Reserves

Nath highlighted that Tripura’s power generation relies heavily on natural gas, but reserves are gradually depleting. “Earlier, the state had around 7.21 lakh power consumers. In the past seven years, that number has risen to 10.38 lakh,” he said.
“With growing modernisation, the demand for a reliable and sustainable power supply has increased. Our government is committed to both modernisation and clean energy growth.”

Due to the falling gas supply, the minister revealed that generation at the Rokhia Power Project has dropped drastically — from 63 MW to just 19 MW. To counter this, the state government, with assistance from the World Bank, is investing ₹935 crore to upgrade the plant using Combined Cycle Gas Turbine (CCGT) technology. The modern system will enhance efficiency without additional gas consumption.

Pumped Storage and Major Power Projects

Tripura is also advancing plans for an 800 MW pumped storage project at Chawmanu, with the Detailed Project Report (DPR) currently being prepared. Furthermore, a 400 KV sub-station at Suryamani Nagar is on the cards to strengthen transmission networks and reinforce Tripura’s position as a power hub in the Northeast.

Expanding Cross-Border Power Trade

The minister also shared that all government offices in Tripura will soon be equipped with rooftop solar power systems, in line with the state’s broader shift toward clean, sustainable energy.

Tripura’s Energy Future

With major projects underway and plans to export power beyond borders, Tripura is steadily transforming from a consumer state into a regional power exporter, marking a significant stride in India’s Northeast energy landscape.
