The announcement, made after the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) meeting chaired by PM Modi, is aimed at strengthening India’s school education system, particularly in aspirational districts, the Northeast, and underserved regions.

PM Modi on Expanding Quality Education

Taking to social media platform X (formerly Twitter), PM Modi wrote:

> “The establishment of 57 new Kendriya Vidyalayas has been approved by the Cabinet. It is gladdening that KVs will include Balvatikas, nurturing children from the foundational stage. Several students will benefit, alongside the creation of many jobs.”

He further emphasized that the move aligns with the government’s commitment to inclusive growth and education reforms under the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020.

Funding and Infrastructure

According to the CCEA, the total estimated requirement of funds for the establishment of the 57 new schools is ₹5,862.55 crore spread over nine years starting 2026-27.

Capital expenditure: ₹2,585.52 crore

Operational expenditure: ₹3,277.03 crore

This financial commitment will ensure modern infrastructure, teaching resources, and facilities across the newly sanctioned schools.

First-Time Inclusion of Balvatikas

In a significant reform step, these 57 KVs will feature Balvatikas — three years of foundational pre-primary education. This is the first time that Kendriya Vidyalayas will formally integrate early childhood learning in line with NEP 2020’s emphasis on foundational literacy and numeracy.

Spread Across Underserved Regions

Of the 57 new Kendriya Vidyalayas:

1.20 will be opened in districts where no KV exists despite a significant number of Central Government employees.

2.14 will be set up in Aspirational Districts.

3.4 in Left-Wing Extremism (LWE)-affected areas.

4.5 in the North Eastern Region (NER) and hilly areas.

Additionally, 7 KVs will be sponsored by the Ministry of Home Affairs, while 50 will be supported by State/UT authorities.

Continuation of Expansion

This approval follows the sanction of 85 Kendriya Vidyalayas in December 2024, continuing the government’s focus on expanding access to affordable, high-quality education across India.

By prioritizing regions that had not been covered since March 2019, the government aims to bridge gaps in education infrastructure and empower children in remote and underserved areas.

A Landmark Push for India’s Education

The expansion of KVs is expected to benefit thousands of students, generate teaching and non-teaching jobs, and strengthen India’s position in achieving the vision of “Education for All.”

With this move, the government reiterates its focus on inclusive, accessible, and equitable education, ensuring that even the remotest parts of India receive opportunities to learn and grow.
