A tragic stampede at Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) chief and actor-turned-politician Thalapathy Vijay’s rally in Karur on Saturday evening has left at least 31 people dead and dozens injured, according to officials. The incident occurred as massive crowds gathered to hear Vijay speak, but chaos broke out as the venue became dangerously overcrowded.

How Vijay’s Karur Rally became a Tragedy
Vijay, officially known as Joseph Vijay Chandrasekhar, was scheduled to address supporters in Karur. Thousands began assembling early in the day, eager to catch a glimpse of the actor-turned-politician. However, his delayed arrival reportedly contributed to restlessness within the swelling crowd.
Witnesses said that as Vijay was about to arrive, several people started collapsing due to suffocation, dehydration, and overcrowding. Despite volunteers distributing water bottles, panic spread quickly, leading to a stampede that stretched across hundreds of meters.
Ambulances struggled to navigate the congested roads, further delaying medical attention for those who had fallen unconscious.
On-Ground Situation at Hospitals
According to Tamil Nadu Minister V. Senthil Balaji, who rushed to the Government Medical College and Hospital in Karur:
“Till now, 31 people have died in the stampede and 58 people have been admitted. The Chief Minister immediately enquired and directed us to deploy extra doctors and provide proper treatment.”Officials confirmed that 46 injured persons are being treated at private hospitals, while 12 others remain admitted at the government hospital.

The Government Medical College and Hospital has reported distressing scenes, with families crowding outside to get updates on their loved ones. Medical staff are working round-the-clock, and additional reinforcements have been called in to manage the crisis.
Chief Minister’s Response
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin has ordered a high-level inquiry into the incident. He is expected to visit Karur on Sunday to meet the victims and their families.
The CM’s office confirmed that immediate relief measures are being coordinated, with compensation announcements likely to follow.
Political Shockwave
The stampede has sent shockwaves across Tamil Nadu’s political landscape, especially given Vijay’s rising popularity as the face of the newly formed TVK party. His transition from cinema to politics had already galvanized thousands, and Saturday’s rally was seen as a key event in his campaign calendar.
For now, however, the focus remains on relief and accountability as grieving families demand answers about crowd management failures.
