According to Superintendent of Police Avinash Kumar Rai, the two men are suspected members of the Tripura United National Force (TUNF), a newly-formed militant outfit operating in the region.

Acting on a tip-off, our team intercepted a vehicle and recovered 14 electric detonators along with neogel explosives. Their intentions were clearly to carry out an attack during Independence Day events,” SP Rai told reporters.

Swift Action Based on Intelligence

The arrests were made during an early morning security operation, hours before official Independence Day ceremonies were set to begin. Sources indicate that police and intelligence agencies had been monitoring the suspects’ movements for several days.

The seized materials, including neogel — a high-powered industrial explosive — and multiple electric detonators, were enough to cause significant damage had they been deployed. Forensic teams have been called in to examine the explosives and determine their intended use.

TUNF: A Growing Threat

The Tripura United National Force is believed to have emerged recently with the aim of destabilizing peace in the region. Law enforcement agencies are now intensifying operations to identify and dismantle the group’s network.

“This is a wake-up call. Even though Tripura has enjoyed relative peace in recent years, threats like this remind us that we must remain vigilant,” said a senior security official on condition of anonymity.

Public Safety and Security Measures

Following the arrests, security has been tightened across Agartala and other districts. Additional checkpoints have been set up, and police patrols have been increased around public gathering areas.

Authorities have also urged the public to report any suspicious activity immediately.

“Our Independence Day celebrations continued without disruption, thanks to the quick action of our officers. But we need the cooperation of every citizen to ensure safety,” SP Rai added.

Ongoing Investigation

The two suspects are currently in custody and are being interrogated to uncover details about their associates and plans. Officials are exploring whether the group has links to other extremist outfits in the Northeast or across the border.

Meanwhile, security agencies have been put on high alert in neighbouring states to prevent any possible spillover activities.
