Tension gripped the emergency ward of Tripura’s GBP Hospital in Agartala after two on-duty doctors were allegedly assaulted by the family members of a patient in the early hours of Sunday.
The incident occurred Tripura’s GBP Hospital around 3 AM, when a patient identified as Bimal Sarkar was brought to the hospital after reportedly consuming a mixture of poison and alcohol. He was immediately attended to by Dr Litan Das in the emergency unit.

However, a verbal altercation broke out when the patient’s sons, Tapan Sarkar and Papan Sarkar, allegedly became aggressive toward the attending medical staff. According to eyewitnesses, the situation escalated quickly as the attendants verbally abused and physically assaulted Dr Das.

When Dr Avik Deb tried to intervene, he was also reportedly manhandled. Another doctor, Dr Santanu Das, was present during the incident.
In a strong statement, Dr Sishendu Dhar, in charge of the emergency unit, condemned the attack and expressed deep frustration over the lack of institutional support. “Despite repeated appeals, no FIR was registered even 12 hours after the incident,” he told reporters, pointing to the failure of both police personnel and private security staff present at the hospital.
The incident has sparked renewed outrage among the medical community, who have long demanded stronger protection protocols and legal safeguards in government hospitals. Medical associations are reportedly planning to stage a protest demanding justice and immediate action against the accused.
