5 Live 7.65 mm Cartridges Found in IIT Bombay Hostel:
A major security concern surfaced at the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay (IIT Bombay) in Powai after five live 7.65 mm cartridges were recovered from a student’s bag inside a hostel following a late-night dispute. The incident, which occurred on February 19, has led to a police investigation into possible illegal possession and transportation of ammunition.

According to officials, the recovery took place during a routine security intervention after a minor financial dispute between students escalated inside Hostel No. 1.

Dispute Leads to Surprise Recovery
Police said that around 1:30 a.m., the Quick Response Team alerted hostel security about a verbal argument between two first-year B.Tech students on the ground floor of the hostel. The dispute was reportedly related to a financial transaction.
When security staff arrived, they noticed the alleged smell of alcohol on two students — Suraj Dubey and his friend Apoorv Mishra. As alcohol is prohibited inside hostel premises, authorities conducted a room inspection as per institutional guidelines.
During the search of Room No. 93, security personnel found a black bag containing five live yellow-metal cartridges marked ‘KF 7.65’ in its front compartment.
Powai Police Register FIR
Following the recovery, an FIR was registered at Powai Police. Officials stated that the cartridges were allegedly brought from Bihar.
During questioning, Suraj Dubey claimed the bag belonged to Apoorv Mishra. Apoorv reportedly told investigators that the cartridges belonged to his acquaintance, Sarvottam Anand Satishchandra Chaudhary (23), a resident of Samastipur, Bihar.
Police sources revealed that Chaudhary had visited the IIT Powai campus on February 12 and allegedly placed the cartridges inside the bag during his visit.

Bihar Link and Illegal Ammunition Angle Under Probe
When Sarvottam Chaudhary returned to the campus on February 19, he was detained for questioning. During interrogation, he allegedly admitted to purchasing the 7.65 mm cartridges from Munger, Bihar — a region historically associated with illegal arms trade.
Security Sub-Inspector Amod Karanje later handed over the recovered cartridges to the police station, after which a formal case was registered against Chaudhary under relevant sections pertaining to illegal possession and transportation of ammunition.
Authorities are now examining whether the incident was an isolated act or part of a broader illegal arms supply network. Police are also investigating the motive behind bringing live ammunition onto the campus and whether any criminal conspiracy was involved.
Security Tightened at IIT Powai
The recovery of live ammunition from one of India’s premier technical institutions has raised serious security concerns. In response, campus security arrangements have been strengthened, and a comprehensive probe is underway.
Further details are awaited as the investigation progresses.
