Agartala, 16 June 2025:
In a significant anti-smuggling operation, the Assam Rifles successfully intercepted and seized a massive consignment of foreign cigarettes worth approximately ₹5.1 crore in Tripura. The operation was conducted near Chandrapur area in Agartala, close to the India-Bangladesh international border.

Based on credible intelligence, the troops recovered 170 cartons of foreign-origin cigarettes, believed to be smuggled from across the border. The contraband was handed over to the customs department for further legal proceedings.
This seizure highlights the increasing efforts by security forces to curb cross-border smuggling activities, especially along sensitive areas in Northeast India. Tripura remains a known transit point for illicit goods smuggled in from Myanmar and Bangladesh.
A senior official from Assam Rifles said,
“Our continued vigilance and swift action are key to disrupting organized smuggling operations. We remain committed to protecting India’s borders.”
This is one of the largest seizures of its kind in recent months, underlining the strategic importance of the state in India’s fight against illegal trade.
