Ayan Mukerji’s much-awaited spy thriller War 2, starring Hrithik Roshan and Jr NTR, hit theatres on August 14, 2025, ahead of the Independence Day weekend. Despite being one of the most anticipated films from the YRF Spy Universe, the movie fell just shy of the coveted ₹100 crore worldwide mark on its opening day, facing stiff competition from Rajinikanth’s Coolie.

Opening Day Numbers
According to early estimates, War 2 opened with ₹52.50 crore net in India — a strong figure but slightly underwhelming when compared to the franchise’s first instalment War (2019) and Shah Rukh Khan’s Pathaan (2023). The film’s India gross stands in the mid-₹60 crore range.
On the international front, the Hrithik–Jr NTR starrer earned just over $3 million (around ₹25 crore) from overseas markets, taking its total worldwide day 1 collection to an estimated ₹90–95 crore.
How It Compares
While the numbers are impressive, War 2 missed crossing the ₹100 crore opening day milestone that has become a benchmark for mega-budget Indian actioners. For perspective:
Pathaan opened with ₹104 crore worldwide in 2023.
Tiger 3 collected ₹94 crore on its first day.
War (2019) debuted at ₹78 crore.

In direct competition, Rajinikanth’s Coolie has dominated the box office, with opening day figures expected to surpass ₹120 crore and potentially approach ₹150 crore.
Mixed Factors at Play
Trade analysts point out that despite the massive buzz, War 2 faced two hurdles — fierce competition from Coolie and lukewarm reviews from critics and a section of audiences. While Jr NTR’s inclusion was expected to boost collections in the Telugu states, the impact fell slightly short of expectations.
What’s Next for War 2
Industry experts believe that War 2 can still have a solid Independence Day weekend if positive word of mouth picks up. The long holiday stretch offers the film a crucial opportunity to recover momentum.
With star power, high-octane action, and a pan-India appeal, the next few days will determine whether War 2 can match or surpass its predecessors in the YRF Spy Universe.
