The Trump-Xi summit is expected to dominate global headlines, as both nations grapple with a prolonged trade war involving tariffs, rare earth exports, and technology sanctions.
Trump struck an optimistic tone before departing, telling reporters, “I think we are going to come out very well and everyone’s going to be very happy.”
The APEC meeting — themed “Building a Sustainable Tomorrow: Connect, Innovate, Prosper” — is expected to serve as a platform for the two leaders to negotiate on issues such as tariff rollbacks, rare earth supplies, and China’s control of critical materials.
Reports suggest that while Trump may skip the formal APEC leaders’ session, he will devote his two days in Gyeongju to bilateral talks and investment negotiations.
Packed Diplomatic Calendar: ASEAN, Japan, and South Korea
Trump’s first stop is the ASEAN Summit in Kuala Lumpur, where leaders of 10 member nations and several dialogue partners — including Brazil’s Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, South Africa’s Cyril Ramaphosa, China’s Li Qiang, Japan’s Sanae Takaichi, and Australia’s Anthony Albanese — will gather to discuss regional economic cooperation.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi will participate virtually, as confirmed by India’s External Affairs Ministry.
Following the ASEAN summit, Trump will head to Tokyo (October 27–29) for high-level trade talks and a meeting with Emperor Naruhito at the Imperial Palace. Japan is expected to announce new investment pledges in US infrastructure and defense industries.

Tensions, Tariffs, and Symbolic Gestures
The tour takes place under the shadow of renewed US-China tensions. Washington has warned of a 100 per cent tariff increase on Chinese goods if Beijing proceeds with export restrictions on rare earth minerals, potentially raising total tariffs to 157 per cent.
Trump has demanded that China lift its export curbs, resume soybean purchases, and curb the flow of fentanyl and precursor chemicals used in illegal drug manufacturing.
Meanwhile, South Korea is likely to honor Trump with the Grand Order of Mugunghwa, its highest civilian award, recognizing his role in regional peace efforts — including mediating a truce earlier this year between Thailand and Cambodia.
However, a long-speculated meeting with North Korea’s Kim Jong Un has been ruled out, following Pyongyang’s latest ballistic missile launches earlier this week.
Investment Push and Regional Balancing
Trump’s delegation includes Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, and Trade Representative Jamieson Greer, signaling the administration’s focus on economic diplomacy.
The tour’s outcomes could reshape Indo-Pacific trade alignments and define whether Washington and Beijing can cool tensions that have rattled global markets. As Trump put it, “When we finish our meetings in South Korea, China and I will have a really fair and really great trade deal together.”
