The historic temple, built in 1501 by Maharaja Dhanya Manikya, has undergone a ₹59 crore redevelopment project under the Union Tourism Ministry’s PRASHAD (Pilgrimage Rejuvenation and Spiritual Heritage Augmentation Drive) scheme, with ₹52 crore sanctioned by the Centre and ₹7 crore contributed by the Tripura government.

A Symbol of Tripura’s Heritage

Located about 65 km south of Agartala, the Tripura Sundari Temple holds immense cultural and spiritual significance. It is considered the third most important Shakti shrine in eastern India after Kalighat in Kolkata and Kamakhya in Guwahati.

High-Level Preparations for PM’s Visit

Senior officials, including Tripura’s DGP Anurag, recently visited Udaipur to review arrangements. Chief Minister Manik Saha is also expected to oversee preparations in the coming days.

“The Prime Minister’s inauguration of the redeveloped temple will be a landmark event highlighting Tripura’s spiritual legacy,” an official told Sky Link Times.

Expansion of Spiritual Tourism: 51 Shakti Peethas Park

In addition to the temple’s redevelopment, the Union Tourism Ministry has approved a ₹97.70 crore project to build a 51-Shakti Peethas Park at Banduar village, just 4 km from the Tripura Sundari temple.

The park will feature replicas of all 51 Shakti Peethas, landscaped gardens, museums, souvenir shops, food courts, and guest accommodation — creating an immersive experience for pilgrims and tourists alike. Chief Minister Saha had laid the foundation stone for the project on July 13, 2025.

Officials say the project will not only preserve Tripura’s spiritual heritage but also significantly boost tourism and employment in the state.

Historical Importance of the Temple

After more than five centuries of royal rule, Tripura officially merged with the Indian Union on October 15, 1949, under a treaty signed by Regent Maharani Kanchan Prabha Devi. The Tripura Sundari Temple remains one of the most enduring symbols of that historical legacy.

Conclusion

The upcoming inauguration, if finalized, is expected to attract thousands of devotees and tourists from across India. With the combined efforts of the Centre and the state, the redeveloped temple and the upcoming Shakti Peethas Park could position Tripura as a major religious tourism hub in Northeast India.
