Tripura Agriculture Minister Ratan Lal Nath reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to increasing farmers income, achieving food self-sufficiency, and boosting rice production across the state.

Addressing a public event on July 13, 2025, the minister stressed that agriculture remains a cornerstone of development in both the state and the country. He pointed out that under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the central and state governments have launched several initiatives focused on empowering farmers and ensuring sustainable food production.

Increasing Farmers Income and Food Self-Sufficiency

“Our goal is to increase farmers income and make the state self-reliant in food production. Initiatives are being implemented with this vision,” said Minister Nath.

One such initiative is the promotion of System of Rice Intensification (SRI) — a method that enhances rice yield while using fewer resources. The minister inaugurated SRI paddy planting at Mohanpur RD Block in collaboration with local Panchayat leaders.

Officials present at the event included:

  • Rakesh Deb, Chairman, Mohanpur Panchayat Samiti
  • Subhashini Bhushana Jamatiya, Vice Chairperson, Farmers’ Welfare Department
  • Sankhar Deb, Vice Chairman, Mohanpur Municipal Council
  • Sanjib Kumar, Director, Agriculture Department

Minister Nath highlighted that Tripura currently ranks second in the country in rice production and exports. The state has adopted a multifaceted strategy to further increase production, especially through:

  • Expansion of paddy cultivation
  • Adoption of high-yielding rice varieties
  • Training programs for farmers on eco-friendly methods

He shared data showing that annually, 15 lakh kanis of land are cultivated for Aush paddy, and 49,000 hectares are used for Boro paddy. An additional 58,000 kanis of land are being cultivated for Aman paddy.

Out of the 58 blocks in the state, 30 blocks have been selected for mushroom cultivation and other food-boosting measures, particularly where self-sufficiency is low. Special emphasis is being placed on increasing rice cultivation in underperforming blocks using the SRI method.

Minister Nath concluded by urging more farmers to adopt the SRI technique, citing its cost-effectiveness and ability to produce up to 80 kg per kani. “This method is scientifically sound and highly productive,” he added.
