Tripura Govt Sanctions Rs 6.6 Lakh Relief for 55 Shopkeepers Affected by Salema Violence

Agartala, Oct 27: The District Magistrate and Collector of Dhalai district has approved a total of ₹6.60 lakh in interim relief and ex-gratia compensation for 55 shopkeepers affected by mob violence allegedly linked to Tipra Motha supporters in Salema under Kamalpur subdivision on October 23, 2025.

According to the official Pay Order (No. F.6(4)/DM(D)/ACCTTS/2025-26/763-66), the compensation has been allocated based on the extent of property loss. The payment was processed under Bill No. 457 dated October 24, 2025, following the directive of the District Magistrate & Collector, Dhalai.

Compensation Distributed Based on Damage Assessment

Out of the total affected shopkeepers:

  • 5 shopkeepers with major losses received ₹25,000 each.
  • 7 shopkeepers with moderate damages received ₹15,000 each.
  • 43 shopkeepers with minor losses were granted ₹10,000 each.

The relief was sanctioned under Memorandum No. F.6(55)/DM(D)/Acctts/2024/755-58, marking a prompt administrative response to assist victims whose businesses were destroyed or looted during the unrest.


Further Inquiry Ordered by Administration

The Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM), Kamalpur, has been directed to conduct a detailed inquiry to ensure that no eligible victim has been left out.
Authorities clarified that additional claims supported by valid documentation will also be considered for compensation in the coming days.

An official from the Dhalai administration stated, “Restoration of normalcy and rehabilitation of the affected traders remain our top priorities. The government stands firmly with those impacted.”


Violence Linked to Tipra Motha Supporters

The October 23 incident reportedly involved a group of Tipra Motha supporters, leading to vandalism and arson targeting local business establishments in Salema’s Shantirbazar area. The clashes caused significant damage to several shops, triggering widespread panic among residents.

Police forces were deployed soon after to bring the situation under control, and investigations are underway to identify those responsible.

Administration Focused on Peace and Rehabilitation

The Dhalai district administration has assured continued support to the affected shopkeepers through financial relief and livelihood restoration measures. The state government also reiterated its commitment to maintaining law and order and ensuring that incidents of political violence do not disrupt public life or local businesses.
