Tripura and Assam have emerged as leaders among smaller and medium energy-consuming states in the State Energy Efficiency Index (SEEI) 2024, released by the Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE) in collaboration with the Alliance for an Energy Efficient Economy (AEEE).

State Energy Efficiency Index 2024:
The index, launched by Akash Tripathi, IAS, Additional Secretary, Ministry of Power and Director General, BEE, evaluates the energy efficiency performance of 36 states and Union Territories for FY 2023-24.
📌 Tripura, with a total final energy consumption of less than 1 million tonnes of oil equivalent (MToE), and Assam, with 1–5 MToE consumption, were recognised as top performers in their respective categories.
Officials highlighted that the recognition reflects the robust ground-level implementation of energy efficiency measures by both states.
Key Highlights of SEEI 2024
Seven Sectors Evaluated: Buildings, Industry, Municipal Services, Transport, Agriculture, DISCOMs, and Cross-Sector initiatives (66 indicators).
Tripura and Assam Achievements:
1.Adopted Energy Conservation Building Code in Buildings sector.
2.Introduced MSME-focused energy efficiency policies in Industry.
3.Framed climate action plans for municipalities.
4.Implemented electric mobility policies in Transport.
5.Promoted solar-powered agricultural pumps in Agriculture.

Nationwide Progress:
1.All 36 states/UTs have prepared State Energy Efficiency Action Plans.
2.31 states/UTs have constituted State-Level Steering Committees on Energy Transition chaired by their Chief Secretaries.
Speaking at the launch, Tripathi stated:
> “India’s energy transition is not just a response to climate imperatives – it is a strategic opportunity to foster innovation, resilience, and inclusive growth. Energy efficiency is a foundational pillar, offering impactful, low-cost solutions across sectors.”
The sixth edition of the SEEI underscores India’s growing focus on energy efficiency as a key driver of sustainable growth and climate action, with Tripura and Assam setting benchmarks for smaller states.
