Sheikh Hasina Sentenced to 21 Years in Prison:
In a major development in Bangladesh’s political landscape, a Dhaka court on Thursday sentenced former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to 21 years of imprisonment after finding her guilty in three corruption cases filed by the country’s Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC). The cases are linked to alleged irregularities in the allocation of plots under the Purbachal New City Project.

According to reports, the verdict was delivered by Judge Mohammad Abdullah Al Mamun of Dhaka Special Judge’s Court-5, who awarded seven years of imprisonment for each case, to be served consecutively.

The judgment comes just days after the International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) on November 17 sentenced Hasina to death in a separate case involving charges of crimes against humanity related to violent demonstrations held in July last year. The tribunal also sentenced former Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal to death and awarded five years’ imprisonment to former Inspector General of Police Chowdhury Abdullah Al-Mamun, who turned state witness.
Family Members and Co-Accused Also Sentenced
Along with Sheikh Hasina, the court handed prison terms to her children — Sajeeb Wazed Joy and Saima Wazed Putul, both sentenced to five years in one of the cases. Of the 20 other accused, 19 received varying prison terms, while one accused was acquitted in all three cases, The Daily Star reported.

Security Tightened Across Dhaka
Authorities deployed a heavy security presence around the Sessions Court premises ahead of the high-profile ruling. Additional police checkpoints and Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) personnel were stationed to prevent unrest.
“In addition to our regular members, an extra two platoons of police have been deployed. Two platoons of BGB personnel are on duty,” Miah Mohammad Ashis Bin Hasan, Deputy Commissioner of the Prosecution Division of Dhaka Metropolitan Police, told The Business Standard.
Hasina Calls Verdict Politically Motivated
Reacting to the ICT verdict earlier, Sheikh Hasina accused the interim administration led by Dr. Muhammad Yunus of orchestrating a politically driven judgment.
She accused the government of attempting to dismantle the Awami League, saying:
> “Millions of Bangladeshis toiling under the chaotic, violent and socially regressive administration of Dr Mohammad Yunus will not be fooled by this attempt to short-change them of their democratic rights.”
