A heartbreaking incident shook Tripura’s Khowai district on Thursday after a 7-year-old boy died when a large sand mound suddenly collapsed on him, police officials confirmed. The child was reportedly playing near a construction site when the accident took place.

Child Trapped Under Sand, Declared Dead at Hospital
According to local authorities, the minor — who had accompanied his friends to the area — was climbing the sand pile when it unexpectedly caved in.
He was buried instantly, and by the time locals managed to rescue him, he had already suffered critical injuries.
The boy was rushed to Khowai District Hospital of Tripura, where doctors declared him brought dead.
Police sources said the collapse happened around the afternoon hours, though the exact time is still being verified.
Police Launch Inquiry Into Negligence
Khowai police have started a preliminary investigation to determine whether the sand mound was left unsecured and if it posed a potential danger to children in the locality.
Officials said they are examining:
Whether the construction material was stored following safety norms
If the area was barricaded to prevent public access
Possible negligence by contractors or site workers
A police officer told reporters that statements from witnesses and locals are being recorded, and further legal steps will depend on the findings.

Locals Demand Accountability
The incident has sparked anger and grief among residents, who claim that large sand mounds are often left unattended near construction zones.
Many locals alleged that no warning signs were placed near the pile, despite children frequently visiting the site to play.
Parents in the region have urged authorities to issue strict guidelines on the storage of sand, bricks, and construction materials near residential areas.
Family in Deep Shock
The victim’s family is devastated by the sudden loss. Neighbours gathered at their home to offer support as the community mourned the young boy’s death.
Authorities are now expected to review safety standards across similar areas in Khowai and other parts of Tripura to prevent such tragedies in the future.
