The seizure took place in the Shantipara and Dhaleshwar areas of Agartala, highlighting the increasing vigilance of security forces against cross-border smuggling activities in the region.

Intelligence-Led Operation in Agartala

According to officials, the joint team acted swiftly after receiving credible intelligence about the movement and storage of smuggled gold and illicit cash. During the operation, authorities recovered gold biscuits weighing approximately 14 kilograms, estimated to be worth nearly ₹19 crore.
In addition to the gold, the agencies also seized unaccounted Indian currency amounting to ₹2.87 crore, bringing the total value of the haul to over ₹21 crore.
Officials said the operation was conducted with precision to avoid any collateral disturbance while ensuring maximum recovery of illicit assets.

Assam Rifles Highlights Coordination with DRI

In an official statement, Assam Rifles said the seizure “underscores the effective coordination and swift action” between the force and the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence in targeting organised smuggling syndicates.
The statement further noted that smuggling networks operating in the region have been under close surveillance, especially following a series of intelligence-led operations conducted in recent months. Tripura, due to its strategic geographical location, has often been used as a transit route for illegal trade, including gold smuggling.

After the recovery, the seized gold biscuits and cash were formally handed over to the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence for further investigation. Officials said legal proceedings will be initiated under the relevant provisions of existing laws.
The DRI is expected to examine the source, transit routes, and intended recipients of the smuggled gold, as well as identify individuals and networks involved in the operation.

Growing Crackdown on Smuggling in the Northeast

Security agencies have intensified their crackdown on smuggling activities across the Northeast, particularly in border states like Tripura, Assam, and Mizoram. Officials believe that sustained intelligence-sharing and coordinated operations are crucial in dismantling well-organised smuggling syndicates.
The latest seizure not only represents a major financial setback for smugglers but also sends a strong message about the government’s zero-tolerance approach towards economic offences and illegal trade.
