Prime Minister Narendra Modi called it a “joyous day” as the sacred Piprahwa Buddha relics returned to India after a gap of 127 years, marking a historic moment of cultural and spiritual significance.
“The return of the Piprahwa relics is not just a matter of faith, but also of deep national pride,” the PM said.

The relics, believed to be among the earliest remains of Lord Buddha, were taken to the UK in the late 19th century and preserved in the Victoria and Albert Museum. Their return is seen as a powerful symbol of India’s enduring spiritual legacy and diplomatic success.
The government plans to enshrine the relics in a secure and respectful setting for devotees and scholars alike. The cultural and religious significance of the relics, excavated from the Piprahwa Stupa in present-day Uttar Pradesh, makes this moment a turning point in India’s cultural restoration efforts.
The return was made possible through continuous diplomatic dialogue and collaboration with international institutions.
