Grand Celebration at Brigade Parade Grounds

The Brigade Parade Grounds was decorated in saffron colours, symbolising the BJP’s celebrations after forming the government in West Bengal. Traditional cultural performances and drum displays added to the festive atmosphere as party workers cheered for the new leadership.

Several top BJP leaders attended the ceremony, including Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, Union Ministers, and Chief Ministers from BJP-ruled states.

After reaching the stage, PM Modi greeted dignitaries and then walked towards Makhanlal Sarkar, presenting him with a shawl before respectfully taking his blessings. The gesture drew loud applause from the audience and quickly became one of the most talked-about moments of the ceremony.

Who Is Makhanlal Sarkar?

Makhanlal Sarkar is regarded as one of the oldest and most respected BJP workers in West Bengal. At 98 years old, he remains closely associated with the party’s grassroots movement in the state.

In 1952, Sarkar was reportedly arrested in Kashmir while accompanying Syama Prasad Mookerjee during the movement to hoist the Indian national flag there. His association with nationalist politics dates back to the early years after Independence.

Following the formation of the BJP in 1980, Sarkar became the organisational coordinator for West Dinajpur, Jalpaiguri, and Darjeeling districts. Party sources say he helped enroll nearly 10,000 members within a year, strengthening the BJP’s organisational base in North Bengal.

From 1981 onward, he served continuously for seven years as district president, a rare achievement during a period when BJP leaders usually held organisational posts for shorter durations.

Suvendu Adhikari Forms New Government

Earlier on Friday, Amit Shah announced Suvendu Adhikari as the BJP Legislative Party leader during a parliamentary party meeting. Following the announcement, Adhikari visited Lok Bhavan and formally staked claim to form the new government before Governor RN Ravi.

With the swearing-in ceremony completed, the BJP officially begins its new chapter in West Bengal under Suvendu Adhikari’s leadership.
