Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla met Australian Senate President Sue Lines on the sidelines of the 68th Commonwealth Parliamentary Conference (CPC) in Barbados, reaffirming the growing strength of the India-Australia Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, which has deepened across multiple sectors since 2020.

During the meeting, Birla emphasised that the partnership now spans defence, trade, renewable energy, and science and technology, underscoring both nations’ shared commitment to a peaceful, sustainable, and prosperous world.

> “Our discussion underscored the ever-strengthening collaboration between our nations, bolstered through forums like the G20 and the Commonwealth,” Birla wrote on X (formerly Twitter).

India Showcases Digital Parliament & AI Innovations

Highlighting India’s leadership in digital governance, Om Birla showcased initiatives such as the ‘Digital Parliament’ and AI-powered multilingual tools designed to make legislative processes more transparent and efficient.
He noted that these innovations reflect India’s global leadership in integrating technology into democratic institutions.

Birla also extended an invitation to Sue Lines and her delegation to attend the 28th Conference of Speakers and Presiding Officers of the Commonwealth (CSPOC), which will be hosted in New Delhi in January 2026.

Meetings with Zambia and Barbados Leaders

On the sidelines of the CPC, Om Birla also met Nelly Mutti, Speaker of the National Assembly of Zambia, where discussions focused on deepening parliamentary cooperation through delegation exchanges and sharing legislative best practices.

In another bilateral engagement, Birla met Arthur Holder, Speaker of the House of Assembly of Barbados, to reflect on the historic India-Barbados friendship, rooted in shared Commonwealth values and a passion for cricket.

> “Our friendship is anchored in culture, democracy, and people-to-people connections,” Birla remarked.

Barbados-India Friendship: A Symbol of History and Trust

During his visit to the National Assembly of Barbados, Birla viewed the intricately carved teakwood Speaker’s Chair—a gift from India in 1966.
Calling it a “symbol of enduring friendship,” he discussed avenues of cooperation in education, culture, and renewable energy, and applauded Barbados’ recent move to grant visa-free access to Indian citizens.

Om Birla Advocates Ethical AI in Legislatures

Earlier, Birla chaired a CPC workshop focused on Artificial Intelligence in governance, stressing the ethical, inclusive, and citizen-centric use of technology in parliaments.
He urged global leaders to ensure that AI bridges the digital divide rather than deepens it, reinforcing India’s role as a responsible technology-driven democracy.
