Odisha Medical Student Raped at Durgapur’s Private Medical College
A shocking incident has emerged from Durgapur, West Bengal, where a second-year medical student from Odisha was allegedly dragged and raped inside the premises of a private medical college late on Friday night.

According to police sources, the assault occurred around 8:30 p.m. when the survivor had stepped out of the campus with a male friend. An unidentified man allegedly dragged her to a secluded spot near the college gate and committed the crime.
The survivor was immediately taken to a local hospital for medical examination and treatment, and police have since launched an investigation.
Father Alleges Threats and Extortion
The survivor’s father told local media that his daughter had gone out to eat phuchka (golgappa) after being called there by her boyfriend, identified as Wasif Ali.
“When she reached the campus gate, around four to five persons were there. One of them raped her, took her phone, and demanded ₹3,000 to return it. Later, the boy who had gone with her brought her back ” the father alleged during a media interaction.
Police are currently verifying the CCTV footage from around the college gate and nearby areas to identify the accused and confirm the sequence of events.
Police Investigation Underway
Officials from the Durgapur police confirmed that a formal FIR has been registered, and multiple teams are scanning video footage to track down the suspect. Forensic teams have been called in, and the survivor’s statement has been recorded under Section 164 of the CrPC before a magistrate.

A senior police officer said preliminary evidence suggests that the incident occurred near the outer gate of the college, but further details will be available only after the forensic and medical reports are submitted.
Parallels with the RG Kar Medical College Case
The latest incident has triggered public outrage across Bengal, drawing comparisons with the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital rape and murder case of 2024 in Kolkata, where a young doctor was brutally killed after being sexually assaulted. That case had sparked massive protests and led to widespread debate over campus safety and women’s security in medical institutions.
Social media users and student groups are already demanding swift action, with hashtags like #JusticeForDurgapurStudent and #SafeCampus now trending on X (formerly Twitter).
Public Outrage and Demand for Justice
Women’s rights groups and student unions have called for stronger campus security, installation of CCTV cameras, and immediate arrest of the culprits.
Local authorities have assured that “no one will be spared” if found guilty.
