No Address Proof Needed for 5 Kg LPG Cylinders:
Amid rising concerns over global energy supplies due to tensions in West Asia, the government on Saturday announced that 5 kg LPG cylinders can now be purchased without address proof, requiring only a valid ID. The move aims to improve accessibility, especially for migrant workers and individuals without local residence documents.

The Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas clarified that these smaller cylinders are readily available at nearby LPG distributorships and can be purchased easily under the relaxed norms.

Move Aimed at Improving Access
Officials said the decision is intended to ensure that vulnerable sections of society, including migrant labourers, can access cooking fuel without bureaucratic hurdles.
Since March 23, approximately 5.7 lakh 5 kg LPG cylinders have already been sold across the country, with over 71,000 units sold in a single day recently—highlighting strong demand for the smaller, more accessible cylinders.
No Fuel Shortage, Govt Assures
The government emphasised that there is no shortage of petrol, diesel, or LPG in the country and urged citizens not to panic buy.
“All retail fuel outlets are operating normally, and adequate stocks are available nationwide,” the ministry said, addressing reports of heavy rush at some petrol pumps triggered by rumours.

Steps Taken to Maintain Supply Stability
To ensure uninterrupted fuel supply, the government has ramped up domestic LPG production and ensured that refineries are functioning at high capacity. Priority is being given to essential sectors such as households, hospitals, and critical services.
Additionally, several demand-side measures have been introduced. These include extending LPG booking cycles and encouraging the use of alternative fuels such as PNG, kerosene, and electric cooking solutions.
States have also been advised to facilitate new PNG connections for both domestic and commercial users.
Crackdown on Hoarding and Black Marketing
The government has intensified monitoring to prevent hoarding and black marketing of fuel. More than 3,700 raids have been conducted recently, leading to strict action against violators, including suspension of LPG distributor licences.
State governments have been empowered under the Essential Commodities Act to take necessary action against offenders and have been directed to conduct regular inspections and public awareness campaigns.
Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely to ensure stable fuel availability across the country.
