NDA Leads Bihar 2025:

A day before the counting of votes in the Bihar Assembly Election 2025, posters outside the JD(U) office boldly proclaimed: “Tiger abhi zinda hai.” As counting began on Thursday, early trends from the Election Commission of India made clear that the slogan was more than political bravado. The NDA surged past the 200-seat mark in the 243-member Assembly, signaling a historic mandate and reaffirming Nitish Kumar’s enduring authority in Bihar politics.

Nitish Kumar’s Political Relevance Reaffirmed

For months, Nitish Kumar’s opponents — from Jan Suraaj’s Prashant Kishor to Congress chief Mallikarjun Kharge — portrayed him as “retired”, “mentally fatigued”, and a mere “mask” for the BJP. Yet, the unfolding results showcase that Nitish’s political hold has not only survived but strengthened.

Analysts argue that the numbers reflect the electorate’s continued recognition of Nitish Kumar’s governance model and coalition-building expertise — assets that remain central to the NDA’s identity in Bihar.

From Modest Beginnings to Nine-Time Chief Minister

Born in Bakhtiarpur, Patna district, in 1951, N Kumar studied engineering at what is now NIT Patna. Beginning his journey in the JP Movement, he rose through socialist politics, held key Union portfolios, and eventually transformed Bihar’s governance landscape.

Nitish first became Chief Minister in 2005, pledging to end “jungle raj” and reverse years of lawlessness. His official profile highlights efforts in law and order reforms, institutional restructuring, women’s empowerment, rural roads, and inclusive growth.

Major initiatives that shaped his tenure include:

2016 liquor ban

Expansion of girls’ education

Rural connectivity & Panchayati Raj reforms

Welfare schemes for EBCs and Mahadalits

A Master of Coalition Politics

Nitish Kumar’s political career is defined by his tactical adaptability. His early alliance with the BJP broke RJD’s supremacy in 2005. The 2013 split from the NDA, followed by poor 2014 Lok Sabha results, led to a dramatic resignation and the appointment of Jitan Ram Manjhi as Chief Minister.

Yet Nitish returned to the NDA and re-established himself as a key figure in national and state politics. He took oath as Chief Minister for a record ninth term on January 28, 2024.

2025 Mandate: A Shift Within the NDA

The 2025 mandate marks an important shift: while Nitish remains the face of governance, the BJP has overtaken JD(U) in seat share, emerging as the alliance’s “big brother”.

Women voters, with turnout touching 69% in Phase 1 and 74% in Phase 2, played a defining role. Caste blocs, especially EBCs and Mahadalits, largely stayed with the NDA.

The Verdict: Nitish Kumar Still Defines Bihar Politics

Despite criticism, shifting alliances, and political turbulence, Nitish Kumar remains central to the NDA’s success. As trends consolidate the alliance’s commanding lead, one message resonates across Bihar —
Nitish Kumar is not just relevant; he is still the NDA’s strongest pillar.
Indeed, as the posters said: “Tiger abhi zinda hai.”
