Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) chief Dr. Mohan Bhagwat has emphasized that “Bharat must rise and establish itself as a nation of Dharma,” calling upon citizens to build a society rooted in moral and spiritual balance.
He was speaking at a lecture series commemorating the centenary of the RSS held in Bengaluru on Saturday. Bhagwat’s address focused on the organization’s century-long journey, the need for social unity, and the role of India in guiding the world through the principles of Dharma.

‘Every Nation Defines Its Own Dharma’
Mohan Bhagwat said that every nation around the world defines its own swadharma — its way of life and contribution to humanity.
“Bharat too must do the same by realizing its civilizational duty and spreading the message of Dharma,” he said.
He emphasized that in its centenary year, the Sangh’s main goal is to reach every village and every section of society, ensuring unity among India’s 142 crore people belonging to diverse faiths and beliefs.
“We have started dialogues even with those who do not identify as Hindus. Some call themselves Hindavi or Indic people — all these are synonymous,” Mohan Bhagwat added.
‘Hindu Is Not a Form, It Is the Essence’– Mohan Bhagwat
Explaining the meaning of the word ‘Hindu,’ Bhagwat said it denotes the essence of inclusiveness and universality.
“‘Hindu’ is not restricted by any form; it applies to anyone who believes in these ideals. Ideals alone are like stars — we can look up to them but must also create examples to follow,” he remarked.
He called for a network of individuals working selflessly for national development, stating that there is far more good happening in the country than what is portrayed in the media.
“At least forty times more good is happening in our country compared to the bad,” he said. “This is the time of good — the time of bad has passed.”
‘Bharat’s Mission Is to Give Dharma to the World’
Drawing inspiration from Swami Vivekananda, Bhagwat said that every nation has a mission to fulfill, and for Bharat, that mission is to give Dharma to the world.
“Dharma is not religion. Religion has do’s and don’ts. Dharma is the eternal nature of things — the balance that sustains life. It is discipline, harmony, and the path of moderation,” he explained.
He stated that extremism has no place in Dharma, and humanity must return to balance to overcome global turmoil.
“Dharma means living life without disturbing others — this is the essence of Buddha’s teaching too,” he said.
Call for Collective Thinking and Positivity
The RSS chief urged citizens to shed colonial mindsets and work together with goodwill, harmony, and positivity.
“Society must act collectively. We are reaching out to caste and religious leaders, encouraging them to uplift weaker groups within their communities,” he said.
He also reflected on India’s historical unity, noting that Hindus and Muslims fought together in 1857 and shared a spirit of assimilation before colonial forces deepened divisions.
“Now we are independent, but remnants of those times still cause havoc. We must sit together and resolve these differences,” Mohan Bhagwat urged.

‘RSS Is Self-Sufficient and Independent’
Bhagwat clarified that the RSS operates solely through volunteer contributions and does not accept funds from external sources.
“To run the Sangh, not a single paisa is taken from outside. Our volunteers contribute every year, even those who are poor. Some save money by giving up certain items for a year and dedicate it to the Sangh,” he said.
“This independence allows us to speak the truth freely, without external pressure. In men, money, and ammunition — we are self-sufficient,” Mohan Bhagwat added.
‘Bharat Must Educate Humanity Through Example’
Concluding his address, Bhagwat said,
“We are one of the oldest nations. Our ancestors spread knowledge across the world without conquest or conversion. The time has come again for us to do the same — to lead by practice, not preaching.”
He reiterated that Bharat’s rise must be guided by Dharma, harmony, and collective progress, as the world looks for balance in turbulent times.
