PM Modi’s Arrival and Priorities at the G20

After landing in Johannesburg on Friday afternoon (local time), PM Modi said he looked forward to holding “productive discussions” with world leaders on pressing global issues.
Our focus will be on strengthening cooperation, advancing development priorities and ensuring a better future for all,” he wrote on X.

The Indian Prime Minister is expected to engage in a series of high-level bilateral meetings on the sidelines of the summit, further bolstering India’s diplomatic outreach.

Key Meeting with Australia’s Anthony Albanese

On Friday, PM Modi held an important bilateral meeting with Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese. Both leaders reviewed the consistent expansion of India-Australia ties, marking five years of their strategic partnership.

In a social media post, PM Modi described the talks as “very good” and highlighted defence, nuclear energy, and trade as three core areas with immense potential for deeper cooperation. Other sectors discussed included education, mobility, cultural exchanges and emerging technologies.

According to the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), both leaders expressed satisfaction at the growing partnership, especially since the elevation of ties to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership in 2020. Albanese also conveyed solidarity with India over the recent terror attack, reaffirming both nations’ commitment to counterterrorism efforts.

A Special G20 Summit on African Soil

This year’s G20 gathering is historic—marking the first time the summit is being held in Africa. It is also the fourth consecutive G20 hosted in the Global South, underscoring the rising geopolitical and economic influence of developing nations.

For PM Modi, this visit marks his fourth trip to South Africa, following earlier visits in 2016, 2018, and 2023.
In his departure statement, he said the summit theme—“Solidarity, Equality and Sustainability”—builds upon the consecutive outcomes from G20 summits hosted by India and Brazil.

He added that India will present its views based on the philosophy of “Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam” (One Earth, One Family, One Future), the core message of India’s G20 Presidency in 2023. The African Union’s entry into the G20 last year remains one of the major achievements of that presidency.

India’s Expanding Global Leadership

PM Modi’s engagements at this year’s G20 Summit reaffirm India’s growing role in shaping global policy frameworks, especially on issues such as development, sustainability, security, and economic resilience. As world leaders gather in Johannesburg, India continues to emphasise inclusive growth, equitable partnerships and a united global approach toward shared challenges.
